Exfoliation is the cosmetic procedure that specifically involves the removal of dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. This process helps to promote skin renewal and can improve the overall texture and appearance of the skin. By sloughing off the outer layer of dead cells, exfoliation aids in revealing fresher, healthier skin underneath and can also enhance the effectiveness of skincare products by allowing them to penetrate more deeply.

While microdermabrasion and peeling are also techniques used to remove dead skin cells, they fall under broader categories of exfoliation. Microdermabrasion is a specific mechanical exfoliation technique using fine crystals or a diamond-tipped wand to physically buff away the top layer of skin. Peeling refers to the application of chemical solutions that cause the top layers to exfoliate and slough off, which can also lead to renewed skin.

Moisturizing does not relate to removing skin cells; it is a procedure aimed at hydrating and protecting the skin. Therefore, defining exfoliation as the act of effectively removing dead skin cells is essential for understanding various skincare processes.
